Special Weapons and Tactics
Special Weapons and Tactics team responds to the county’s most dangerous and potentially volatile law enforcement situations. The team is responsible for responding to barricaded subjects, hostage negotiations, service of high risk search / arrest warrants, among many other tactical situations. The team is led by Lieutenant Mark Whitwell.
Qualifying for the team is a rigorous process where each person is selected through a competitive process of elimination seeking the most qualified for the job at hand.
Team members receive additional training through SWAT school, formal seminars, and other various training programs offered within the department as a team. They are trained to perform high risk operations that fall outside the average abilities of a regular deputy.
Due to the danger of the position each deputy is issued specialized equipment such as riot control agents, specialized weapons, and entry tools necessary for these specific covert operations they are to achieve.
